Although avoiding cavities is the ideal, it’s good to know decay can be easily treated with dental fillings. At the office of Richard D. Weigand, DDS in Spokane, Washington, we use composite tooth colored fillings for cavity treatment for multiple reasons. Composite fillings are strong, long-lasting, and aesthetically pleasing, as well as mercury- and metal-free! Dr. Katie Griffith takes time to answer your questions about composite fillings here.
Composite fillings are dental restorations used to treat cavities. They’re composed of tooth-colored plastic resin material mixed with fine glass. In addition to treating decay, composites can be used as dental bonding to repair minor tooth damage, reshape odd-looking teeth, or close small tooth gaps to improve your smile’s aesthetics.
After removing the decay and cleaning your tooth, Dr. Griffith will apply the composite mixture in layers to your tooth. Each layer is cured and hardened using a special light to keep it in place. After the last layer has been applied, we’ll shape the filling to take on the natural shape of your tooth, adjust your bite, and polish your tooth, leaving it shiny and smooth.
The exact timeline for completing this treatment depends on the size and location of your filling. However, the process can take up to 20 minutes longer than getting an amalgam filling, which is usually 30 to 60 minutes, due to the curing and hardening process.
Patients favor composites due to their tooth-colored appearance, but white fillings have more to offer than mere aesthetics. These fillings bond directly with your tooth enamel, so they don’t require a lot of drilling. This helps conserve more of your tooth’s natural structure. Composites create a tighter seal around your teeth, which helps prevent sensitivity and provides greater protection from future cavities. They’re also metal- and mercury-free, making them less of a health risk.
Absolutely! Composite fillings won’t trigger metal allergies or accidentally leak mercury into your system. The resin mixture is 100% biocompatible with your mouth, which is why dentists across the country widely use them.
With proper care, composite fillings can last 7 to 10 years. Your diet, lifestyle, and oral hygiene habits all play a role in keeping these fillings strong and healthy long-term.
To avoid discomfort and pain, Dr. Griffith will numb your mouth for this treatment. Rest assured, we’ll do our best to keep you comfortable and relaxed in the dental chair.
