Laser dentistry offers an innovative means of treating common dental issues like decay and gum disease. Dental lasers are more precise, less time-consuming, minimally invasive, and less painful than traditional treatments. Only some people, however, are good candidates for laser dentistry. By learning more about laser treatments, you can get a better idea if they’re for you. Your Spokane, Washington dentist, Dr. Richard Weigand, can help you make good decisions about dental laser treatments.
Dental lasers are used for specific dental procedures. After a thorough evaluation of your gums and teeth, Dr. Weigand can determine if your problem(s) meets the criterion for laser dentistry treatment. Dental lasers can replace traditional drills for removing decay from your teeth before a filling. Dental lasers are also effective in treating gum disease. The laser light beams target the bacteria causing the infection and aid in removing infected tissues. Laser dentistry also addresses teeth whitening, gum contouring, and enhancing gum tissue appearance.
Greater accuracy and precision are among the many benefits offered by laser dentistry. Dental lasers emit a narrow, intense light beam that can target specific areas of your mouth to remove diseased tissues without harming surrounding healthy tissues. Dental lasers can minimize pain and bleeding and promote quicker healing. Lasers are also quieter and less intrusive than a dental drill.
When assessing your suitability for laser dentistry, Dr. Weigand will take into account the following factors:
The Problems You Need to Correct: Not all dental issues are suitable for laser treatment. As mentioned earlier, dental lasers are effective in treating gum disease, reshaping gums, improving gum appearance, and eliminating plaque-causing bacteria from teeth. In some cases, lasers can also be used for cavity removal but may not fully replace traditional drilling.
Previous dental treatments may impact your eligibility for laser dentistry. Lasers can’t be used on teeth with crowns, fillings, or severe decay. Nor can lasers treat decay between your teeth.
Your General Health & Medical History: Certain health issues can make you a poor candidate for laser dentistry. If you have uncontrolled diabetes, a bleeding disorder, or a certain type of infection, Dr. Weigand may recommend an alternate treatment. Women who are pregnant or who plan to become pregnant will need to wait until after giving birth, at least six weeks after, to start their treatment.
Dental Anxiety: Laser dentistry could be a good choice for people with dental anxiety as lasers don’t emit shrill noises like dental drills. In some cases, dental lasers eliminate the need for anesthesia. Laser dentistry is appropriate for children and adults, even if you have sensitive gums and teeth.
